WORKSHOP OF THE "NORTH POLE" DRIFTING STATION

    • The location of the station's workshop depends on the scope of equipment and the capacity of diesel generator on the station.
    • On a station with a standard scope of scientific research, where 16K diesel generators are used, and transportation consists of tractor-bulldozer DT-75, the workshop is located in the diesel generator's area, usually in the cabin which holds diesel supply.
    • A long work table is set up, and tools for woodworking and metal work are attached to the table and the walls.
    • Shelving is erected to hold nails, screws, etc., according to size and type.
    • One of chief mechanic's responsibilities is maintaining appropriate fire prevention equipment located in the workroom.
    • Several shelves are set up for hose and cable storage.
    • All equipment and supplies are sorted according to whether it should be kept indoors, or outside. Cold sensitive equipment is stored in the workroom, and the rest is kept in connecting storage areas, and in an improvised outdoor storage, which consists of wide boards placed over empty barrels.
    • Such outdoor storage system protects equipment from snowdrifts and allows for quick access to stored goods at any time of the day and the year.
