STRUCTURE AND PERSONNEL OF THE NORTH POLE STATION

    • Preparation for establishing North Pole drifting station begins with selection of personnel three to six months prior to the drifting season.
    • In the second stage, the location of ice floe for drifting station set-up is selected, which is a crucial step for the success of the expedition.
    • After participation in the expedition is planned out, every specialist recommends to the head of station a list of supplies and equipment necessary for the work of their departments.
    • A standard selection of equipment is available based on the experience of many previous expeditions.
    • New types of equipment and supplies will be considered, based on their cost-effectiveness and weight (which is of great importance).
    • After all the necessary equipment and supplies are selected and purchased, they are labeled, packaged, and stored, and a detailed list is prepared. The head and deputy head of the station are responsible for the safety of the stored cargo.
    • Selection of ice floe is conducted via satellite and direct visual selection on site.
    • After the definitive selection of ice floe, members of the expedition arrive on site.
    • The head of station selects the locations for the station and airplane landing.
    • After the first tents and the diesel engine are set up, the remaining living spaces are arranged, and everything is set up for making hot meals and for the operation of the main generator.
