ENERGY SUPPLY FOR NORTH POLE DRIFTING STATION

    • Energy supply for a polar expedition is of crucial importance, as a lack of energy can sabotage scientific research and undermine living conditions on the station.
    • During the preparatory period the chief mechanic and mechanical electrician of the station assess the energy requirements based on the planned scientific research.
    • Taking into account the requirements for research, personnel needs, communication, medical assistance, and food preparation a decision is made regarding purchasing the main and the back-up diesel-generators.
    • Based on the experience of many previous expeditions, power generators of 18, 16, 30, 48, 60 or 100 Kilowatts (AB-1 and AB-2 type) are selected based on the expedition's requirements.
    • As the heaviest cargo, power generators are dropped off first, by airplane or helicopter, and if the expedition is dropped off from the ice-breaker, the engines of the highest capabilities are selected to increase the capabilities for scientific research.
    • Diesel generators are places on special skis located on the floor of the cabins, which makes it possible to move living and office spaces to safe locations in case of a crack in the ice floe.
    • Diesel-generator is assembled and started first, followed by the two additional generators.
    • Cable connections are then established in an organized fashion. All connections are made from the main panel to make it possible to turn off any cabin or laboratory quickly in case of a crack in the ice floe.
    • Energy is supplied 24 hours a day for the duration of the expedition, as during preventive inspection and repairs the reserve engine is utilized.
    • Diesel mechanics are on duty 24 hours a day in shifts, and at night personnel on duty also checks oil pressure and takes equipment readings.
    • Mechanics are fully responsible for taking necessary precautions for fire prevention.
    • Chief mechanic is selected from those with previous experience on drifting stations. In addition, a less experienced mechanic may be selected to assist him. If there are three mechanics on the station, one is selected to be responsible for transportation. There are usually two to three transportation devices on the station.
    • All mechanics on the North Pole station can perform each other's work when necessary, as all are hired with necessary qualifications in diesel engines, tractors, bulldozers, welding, and other.
