      MESS HALL OF THE "NORTH POLE" DRIFTING STATION


    • Mess hall and galley are connected into a single module, which includes two to three cabins or one large tent.
    • Heating utilizes the diesel station's excess heat.
    • Lighting is provided with luminescent lamps.
    • Ventilation is natural and forced.
    • Mess hall serves as a place where the station's personnel take their meals, and between mealtimes as an improvised gym and recreation room with board games, movies, and video films available.
    • Mess hall includes bookshelves (library).
    • The corner adjacent to the galley includes a table for dishes, and a serving table, where dishes are washed after meals.
    • Personnel on night duty spends his shift in the mess hall where he peels vegetables (potatoes, onions, etc.) for the next day's meal, cleans, takes the garbage out, keeps a log, and washes dishes.
    • The mess room hosts all celebrations (birthdays, state holidays, meetings, etc.).
    • In the evenings the mess hall is the meeting place for off-duty personnel who engage in sports competitions (push-ups, weight-lifting, etc.), board games (chess, checkers). Pool (billiards) is sometimes set up in the mess hall.
    • Study circles for interested personnel meet here to study foreign languages, car repairs and others.
    • A station's newspaper is prepared and mounted on the wall, the ice floe drift is marked on the map daily.
    • Pool and table tennis tournaments are organized.
    • Radio chess tournaments are held with various organizations on the mainland.
    • For the New Year celebration a Christmas tree is set up in the mess hall. The tree is brought in during the fall, or is dropped off with the holiday mail, in case a runway cannot be set up for the airplane to land during the polar night period.
    • Weightlifting tournaments are held.
