North Pole Drifting Station SP-32
In April 2003, Center Pole, a nonprofit organization, will construct a drifting
station in the Arctic Ocean. This effort will be supported by the Russian
government and the Russian Academy of Sciences. The year-round station is
designed as a scientific and educational community that will attract researchers,
students, journalists, and adventurers. The North Pole Drifting Station (NPDS) has
an expected life of several years.
The vision for the NPDS is a far-reaching one: to develop further data on the
Arctic environment and to educate the international community - both through
participation in the expeditions on-site and via satellite and television - about
the fragile nature of the Arctic Ocean.
The NPDS will offer a full range of environmentally-friendly services including
electricity, an ice airport, heated and comfortable accommodations, medical care,
hot meals, clothing and gear. Technical support for any equipment needed for
intensive scientific research, as well as global communication, will be available.
Transportation to the NPDS will be by airplane and helicopter through Russia,
Norway or Canada.

The following services are provided for members of the expedition:
- cargo delivery and storgage in Moscow
- cargo delivery and storage in all airports and ports en route to the destination
- all loading and unloading
- assistance with necessary documentation
- medical exam
- hotel rooms
- cargo delivery to the North Pole Drifting Station
- special clothing
- comfortable accommodations (clean bedding, Russian baths, etc.)
- nutritious and tasty food provided on a timely basis
- qualified medical assistance, if necessary
- energy supply
- radio and satellite communication with any destination in the world
- transportation within the station (tractor, snow-mobile, dog sled)
Foreign students can communicate with the station's personnel in their native language, which invaluable for educational and scientific programs.
We are currently conducting negotiations with NASA regarding the use of a dedicated satellite to support international educational programs.

The station is equipped with
an ice airport.
Flexible flight schedule enables timely delivery of cargo, regardless of weather conditions (e.g., if the weather in the airport of Isl. Shpitzbergen does not permit landing, the airplane can land in Isl. Nagurskaya). Cargo drop off with discardable parachutes can be arranged to any area of the ice drifting station, or to the experiment site. Full safety of cargo has been demonstrated in 96% of the cases.
NPDS can accommodate a variety of scientific and educational projects, as well as programs tailored to the needs of particular groups and individuals.
