      MESS HALL OF THE ARCTIC EXPEDITION


    • Mess hall is located in a separate tent which occupies 80 sq. meters, is 2.5 meters tall, and can be easily filled with more than 50 persons at a time.
    • Mess hall is a carcass construction, covered with a thick plastic material, which is water-repellent, and provides wind protection. An additional warm layer is attached to the tent from the inside, which creates an additional air layer for protection from the cold.
    • The mess hall is heated with warm air, the temperature is kept at 16-18 degrees centigrade.
    • The tent is set up with a corridor, which is used for taking off outside clothing, and has an additional benefit of wind and cold air protection, due to the frequent comings and goings of personnel to and from the mess hall.
    • The mess hall serves as a place to take meals, and also a meeting place for all members of the expedition, guests and tourists.
    • The mess hall hosts meetings, concerts conducted by the members of the expedition, as well as by famous artists, lectures by invited speakers, chess and checkers competitions, as well as weightlifting competitions.
    • The experience of the past expeditions has showed that personnel spend most of their free time in the mess hall, and retire to the rooms mostly to sleep.
    • Tea, instant coffee, sugar, and cookies always set up on the mess hall tables, as well as electric kettles and thermoses.
    • Personnel on duty at night spend their shift in the mess hall, making notes in the shift journal.
    • The mess hall has large windows, which allows in sufficient light during the polar arctic day.
    • A VCR and a musical center are set up in the mess hall.
    • The personnel on duty is responsible for cleaning the mess hall, which includes washing the floor, cleaning and washing dishes, washing down all surfaces and taking out garbage and refuse to a specially designated area.
    • The chief mechanic is responsible for fire safety of the mess hall.
