GOALS AND TASKS OF CENTER POLE

"Polus" Arctic and Antarctic Research Centre has been created under the patronage of the President of the Association of Polar Explorers of Russia, Vice Speaker of the State Duma, Mr. Artur Chilingarov. The majority of his personnel has taken part in arctic expeditions of the past years, headed drifting stations, conducted transportation flights in the Arctic and Antarctic regions, and are renown experts in their field.

Center Pole is the only organization in Russia, which has received a permission from the Transportation Ministry to build ice airports in the North Pole region, and this is not surprising. Center Pole, in close cooperation with the leading scientific organizations in this field - the Russian Institute of Arctic and Antarctic Regions and the State Meteorology Committee - is the first in our country to restore the North Pole drifting stations after an 11 year interruption. This builds a solid base for continuous research of the inaccessible Arctic regions by Russian and foreign scientists.

Unlike other Russian companies which have concentrated their efforts on developing arctic tourism, and often lack competency to provide for safe conditions, Center Pole considers its main goal scientific development, preparing material and technical conditions for specialists working in the Arctic and Antarctic regions. To achieve these goals it is essential to involve professionals of the highest qualifications, because, despite technological progress, work conditions in these regions are often quite difficult and sometimes dangerous.

Center Pole is open for cooperation with Russian, foreign, and international organizations, and is ready to provide technical assistance for a wide variety of projects in the Arctic and Antarctic regions.
